Kicking Off Your 2019 Fitness Goals

You’ve likely got a New Year’s resolution in mind, and it could be fair to guess that it’s centred around fitness. But while it’s easy to say you’re going to work on your motivation to get out and kick your exercise goals in the New Year, actually doing it can be a whole other game.

Whether you’re the best weightlifter at your local gym, or you’ve never stepped inside one before, there are plenty of ways you can get a headstart on your fitness objectives – no matter your level of experience. So, as 2019 comes around, why not make it your year to smash your workout inspo? Take a look at our tips below to find out how you can get started on the right path to success.

Write it down

When you’ve had enough time to think about your goals, sit down and take a moment to write it all down. It’s important to set specific and measurable objectives for yourself, and they must be realistic. Writing these down will also make them easier to achieve, as they allow you to visual them and plant seeds towards what steps you need to take to do so. Instead of setting the goal ‘I want to lose weight’, narrow it down to more granular details – e.g. is there a first goal weight you’d like to meet? Consider if there’s a certain length you’d like to be able to run for without stopping. Break your goals down into smaller ones that remain tangible enough to reach.

Make it realistic

Everyone’s fitness goals are different and a timeline of how you want to meet your results can’t be a one-size-fits-all scenario. If you currently go to the gym three to four times a week, then it may be realistic for you to start exercising five to six days a week to build more muscle. If you’ve never done a squat before, your goals and strategies should be tailored to your fitness level to avoid stresses and disappointment. By having tangible goals in mind, you’re much more likely to stay on track with your progress and keep working towards where you want to be.

Invest in some good quality gym clothing

If you set a workout goal for the New Year, make sure you’re equipped with the right activewear to get started. While ‘dress to impress’ isn’t really the rule of thumb here, it does help to feel confident in your gym get-up, so opting for appealing, functional and comfortable apparel will help you get on the right track. In fact, recent studies have shown that your performance is improved when you’re feeling good about the way you look during exercise, proving women’s activewear and men’s gym wear can play a vital role in your end-result.

Reward yourself

What did you do to celebrate achieving your most recent goal? Perhaps you treated yourself to a nice meal or a new outfit. When you reach your fitness objectives, it’s important to reward yourself for doing so. Although most treats are food-related, there are plenty of great ways you can celebrate with that won’t undo your hard work. Some ideas include a nice night away, a beach day or some new gym clothing. By regularly rewarding yourself for achieving your goals, you’re more likely to stay on track and reach your milestones faster.
